Enjoying the season in our own backyard

There is a moment every fall when you realize Napa has changed. The pace of summer begins to ease, the vineyards turn from green to gold, mornings become crisp, and the hills seem to glow in the afternoon sun. For those of us who live here, fall is a wonderful reminder that we don’t have to go anywhere to enjoy a beautiful season. Some of the best autumn experiences are right outside our doors.

Take a walk and watch Napa change

Fall is perhaps the best time of year to explore Napa’s parks and trails. When temperatures cool, it’s much easier to enjoy a morning or late-afternoon walk.

For a quick workout with a view, head to Westwood Hills Park. The climb is worthwhile for the sweeping views over the city and valley. Alston Park is another local favorite, especially for dog owners and anyone who enjoys open hillsides, vineyard views and plenty of fresh air.

For a longer outing, Skyline Wilderness Park offers miles of trails and beautiful views across Napa Valley. And if you prefer something flatter, Kennedy Park and the Napa River area provide an easy place to walk, bike or simply sit and watch the river.

Make Saturday morning a Napa tradition

Fall is also a wonderful time to rediscover the Napa Farmers Market. Located at 1100 West Street in downtown Napa, the market is open Saturdays year-round and Tuesdays through December 22. It is much more than a place to buy vegetables. You’ll find flowers, baked goods, specialty foods, artisan products and plenty of familiar faces.

For locals, that may be the best part: running into neighbors, chatting with farmers and discovering what is fresh that week. The market has more than 100 vendors throughout the year and is designed specifically to connect local producers with the community.

Enjoy harvest without the crowds

Yes, the grapes are being harvested—but you don’t necessarily have to fight the traffic on Highway 29 to enjoy the season.

Take a drive along the Silverado Trail, Dry Creek Road or the quieter roads around Oak Knoll. Watch the vineyard crews working, notice the changing colors and stop somewhere for lunch. If you have friends visiting from out of town, this is the perfect time to show them the Napa Valley that locals know.

And remember that some of our favorite wineries offer quieter, more personal experiences away from the busiest visitor routes. Fall is a great excuse to revisit a place you haven’t been to in a while—or discover a small winery you’ve driven past for years.

Don’t forget the Napa River

Autumn is a beautiful time to get out on the river. Kayaking or paddleboarding can provide an entirely different view of downtown Napa and the surrounding landscape. Napa Kayak offers rentals and guided outings, while the riverfront itself is an easy place to stroll.

Even if you never get on the water, an afternoon walk around the Oxbow area followed by a stop at Oxbow Public Market makes an easy fall outing. Grab something to eat, browse the shops and enjoy being outside while the weather is still warm.

Fall traditions for families

For families, a visit to Stanly Lane Pumpkin Patch in Carneros is a longtime Napa fall tradition. Picking out pumpkins, taking pictures and enjoying the seasonal atmosphere can turn an ordinary October afternoon into a family memory.

There are also some special local events worth putting on the calendar. This year, Bale Grist Mill Historic State Park is holding its annual Old Mill Days October 10, a family-friendly celebration of harvest season.

Enjoy being a local

Perhaps the best thing about fall in Napa is that you don’t need an itinerary. Take your dog for a walk. Meet a friend for coffee. Shop the farmers market. Pick up a pumpkin. Have lunch outside. Take the long way home through the vineyards.

We spend so much of our time living in Napa that it’s easy to forget what a special place it is. Fall gives us a reason to slow down and appreciate it again—not as tourists, but as neighbors.

So this autumn, skip the road trip. Stay close to home. Look around. The season is happening right here.
