Lucky Penny Productions - Announcing 2019-2020 Season


Lucky Penny Productions’ first play was produced in 2009. Now the Napa-based theatre company is looking ahead to its 11th year, and has announced the plays and musicals chosen for the 2019-20 Professional Season. The season includes six musicals and two plays.

“We love to craft a season that offers something for everyone, and for our 11th year we have a mix of classics and new creations,” said company Co-Founder and Artistic Director Taylor Bartolucci. “We’ve also included a show specifically for young actors as part of our mission to give opportunities to up and coming performers.”

9 to 5 The Musical

Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot. Based on the 1980 hit movie and featuring songs by Dolly Parton, “9 to 5 The Musical” tells the hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the late ‘70s in an outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little bit romantic fashion.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

When Randle Patrick McMurphy gets transferred for evaluation from a prison farm to a mental institution, he assumes it will be a less restrictive environment. But the martinet Nurse Ratched runs the psychiatric ward with an iron fist, keeping her patients cowed through abuse, medication and sessions of electroconvulsive therapy. A battle of wills begins between the rebellious McMurphy, who becomes a champion of the suppressed patients, and the inflexible Ratched whose methods of dealing withMcMurphy grow increasingly extreme. Based on the legendary novel by Ken Kesey.

Miracle on 34th Street: The Musical

Based on the beloved, timeless film, this heartwarming musical adaptation features music by Meredith Willson, creator of “The Music Man.” It’s the story of a little girl who believes in the magic of Christmas, a man who believes he is the real Kris Kringle, and a mother who needs to believe in love again. Featuring the classic scene of Santa on trial in a Manhattan courtroom!been brought to the stage.

Xanadu A Lucky Penny Young Actors Production

Xanadu follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mount Olympus to Venice Beach in 1980 on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time – the first ROLLER DISCO! But, when Kira falls into forbidden love, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation, and chaos abounds. Based on Universal Pictures’ cult classic movie starring Olivia Newton-John, with a score composed by pop-rock legends, Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, our Young Actors Production will feature an all-youth cast!

Five Course Love

The evening begins at Dean’s Old-Fashioned All-American Down-Home Bar-B-Que Texas Eats, where a blind date goes charbroiled wrong. Next, at the Trattoria Pericolo, we meet a mob wife – then at Der Schlupfwinkel Speiseplatz, a waiter, a dominatrix and her kept man – while over at the Star-Lite Diner, a waitress pines for her true love and gets a little help from Cupid. Three actors play fifteen different characters in five different restaurants, all on the hunt for one true love.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

An unjustly imprisoned barber returns to London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads the man to a failing shop selling the worst meat pies in London – but Mrs. Lovett’s luck changes when the man with the razor develops a thirst for blood and provides her with an unending supply of fresh ingredients and soon they’re lining up for these tasty treats. Sweeney Todd has become a bloody, worldwide success since being awarded eight Tonys, including Best Musical, for its Broadway premiere in 1979. This thrilling, theatrical treat has simultaneously shocked, awed and delighted audiences across the world for 40 years.

The Quality of Life

Filled with compassion, honesty and humor, “The Quality of Life” tells the story of Dinah and Bill, and Jeanette and Neil. Dinah and Bill are a devout, church-going couple from the Midwest, struggling to keep their lives intact after a tragic loss. Jeannette and Neil have lost their home to a wildfire and Neil has cancer. When Dinah and Bill come to visit her cousin Jeanette in Northern California, they are both moved and perplexed by their cousins’ remarkable acceptance of their situation - but their sympathy turns to something else when they discover how Jeanette and Bill plan to manage their future. “The Quality of Life” is a stunningly meaningful play that carries a particular power in Northern California.

The Great American Trailer Park Musical

There’s a new tenant at Armadillo Acres—and she’s wreaking havoc all over Florida’s most exclusive trailer park. When Pippi, the stripper on the run, comes between the Dr. Phil–loving, agoraphobic Jeannie and her tollbooth collector husband—the storms begin to brew. How can Badass Betty and her cohorts Linoleum and Pickles keep everyone happy and sane – especially when the unpredictable Duke, Pippi’s last former boyfriend, comes sniffing around? Lucky Penny Co-Founders Taylor Bartolucci and Barry Martin helped create the first North Bay production of this hilarious show in 2013 – so popular it ran more than 40 performances in Napa and Santa Rosa. Fans have been asking for more, so the Armadillo Acres gang is coming back for another lap ‘round the track.
